FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Do What You Love

By:Salem

One thing I don't understand is how parents don't support you or back you up sometimes. Having parents born and raised in Africa only makes it harder for them to understand how America's youth society works. I'm sure this is true with most of my peers that have foreign parents, but I can't help being jealous of my friends who's parents give them the unconditional support. Not just support, but having your parents trust you with your decisions on your life. It's like anything I do without their approval will result in failure. Success to them would mean dedication to school as well as maintaining very little social life. If you know me, then having no social life is impossible. I understand that parents just want the best for their kids, but at the same time they can't expect the best when your not giving them your best. In my opinion giving your child full support is part of giving your best as a parent.

Earlier today when I saw my dad he asked what I wanted to do career wise. When I told him I wanted to be a journalist and possibly work in a PR firm. He looked at me as if I said I wanted to be a Princess or something stupid and impossible. He said, "that's not a career that will bring you money so don't bother doing it". I know some people choose their careers based on money, but I want to write. I like to write. I know I need improvement and practice, but that's with everything in life when one is trying to perfect their craft. As long as I can maintain a roof over my head and keep my bills paid, I would love to write for a living and even if it won't pay all my bills....I still want to write. I get that the theme for people to come to America is for better future for their children, but who's to say what's a better future than the child themselves. If I want to write then let me write!

With that said I say all this in hopes that people do try to achieve their dreams and even if you don't have the support you need or deserve in the end, when you make it you get to say you did it.
