FEMΔLE GONE ROGUE: Sally Mann

In A Mann's World
Sally Mann is an American photographer from Lexington, Virginia. Her latest work mostly composed of the Landscapes in Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, and Georgia. However, some of her more famous work comes from the series of photos of her three children. It was taken between 1984-1991 & was called "Immediate Family". It was first shown in 1991.

These pictures at the time and even in some eyes presently are very controversial becasue her children in many of the pictures are nude. Mann disagrees and says that she took the pictures from a maternal stand point. Some of the images are very haunting and fairy-tale like, while others are very intimate and give off a sense of vulnerability. Mann through her children Emmet, Jessie and Virginia ,was able to capture the essence of childhood and growing up.

I think my favorite part of Mann's work on this series is that she captured her children in a way that kids aren't usually captured. Not because of the nudity, but because in most cases kids are photographed smiling and playing. Those images give off a sense of humor or make the viewer say "aww how cute". In contrast, you can't really say that of Mann's work.

Mrs. Sally herself...
Be sure to google her to see more of her work.
