HEYGIRLHEY VOL.3

JANELLE MONAE

Janelle Monae (Janelle Monae Robinson) was born December 1st, 1985 in Kansas City. Monae moved New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Her original plan career goal was to go onto Broadway, but she quickly changed her mind to music something she felt she could use to change the world. After her schooling in New York Monae moved to Atlanta where she met Outkast’s member Big Boi. When meeting Big Boi, Monae got the opportunity to be in the film ‘Idlewild’ where she had featured songs ‘Call the Law’ and ‘In Your Dreams’.

In 2007, Monáe released her first solo called ‘Metropolis‘. The concept for the album is in four parts or suites where it was to be released on her website in the form of mp3 downloads. The Metropolis concept suites has an inspiration of musical, cinematic figures which include Alfred Hitchcock, Debussy, and Philip K. Dick. The suites puts Fritz Lang's 1927 silent film ‘Metropolis’ that Monae refers as "the godfather of science-fiction movies.” (The Metropolis android Maria is the evil, havoc-sowing double of the messianic figure to the city's strictly segregated working class). In August 2008, the album was re-released as Metropolis: The Chase Suite (Special Edition) with two new tracks. The second and third suites of Metropolis were combined in a disk album. Monae decided to portray an alter-ego named Cindi Mayweather for this two part album. The alter-ego, becomes “a messiah-esque figure to the android community of Metropolis.” Cindi Mayweather represents an interpretation of androids as that are a segregated minority. Or how Monae describes as the “Others.” After the release of the first part ‘Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase)’,the plans were changed after Monae was signed under Bad Boys Records later that year.

Fun Fact: Janelle Monae performed on an episode of ‘One Tree Hill’.
