FEMΔLE GONE ROGUE: Peggy Oki

Last night, I watched the documentary that the Dogtown and Z boys created by one of the original Z-Boys, Stacy Peralta. The Z-boys were twelve teenagers from the slums of Santa Monica. In the 70's, they started the skateboard sub-culture and created the modern skateboarding style we have today. These kids just wanted to go out and surf and skate everyday, they had no clue that they would start a revolution. Out of the twelve skaters on the [Zephyr] team one of them was a girl and that girl was Peggy Oki.

In the Documentary Oki reminisced on the first time the Z-boy team competed in a real competition in 1975 at the Del Mar Nationals. Oki Placed first in the girls division, and many girls complained to the judges. The judges responded by saying she was better than many of the boys too.

Oki currently lives in Santa Barbara where she works as an artist and is a strong advocate for whales, marine creatures, and the environment. If you like skateboarding, The Lords Of Dogtown movie, or just documentaries in general I recommend watching Dogtown And Z-Boys.

  2. Love her. I don't think her artwork is necessarily lame, it's done skillfully, but it isn't high concept.

I'm glad though, that she's capitalizing on something she loves doing and people will probably buy her prints as novelty items.
