FOOD FOR THOUGHT | FRIENDSHIP: Communication Is Key

By: Tammy

"Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It's not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything."
- Muhammad Ali

I value friendship a lot. They make life a little more tolerable. Making friends is super easy, but maintaining one is the challenge.

Granted, not everyone is alike and are going to get along at all times, it's natural. In the past I've had friendships that could potentially have been good and strong ones, but completely blew up in flames because we weren't voicing our thoughts, opinions and feelings to each other. Instead, I held my tongue which led to built up anger and all that was left to do was gossip about it to other people instead of directing it to whoever I was having mixed feelings about. I think girls in general are guilty of this. Things like that will only take you so far. People are not mind readers, so tell them how you're feeling.
Here are some words of advice consisting what I've learned and got from past/current friendships:

1. People are not mind readers. Voice your thoughts, feelings and opinion when there's something bothering you. Holding your tongue will make you bitter.

2. Be open minded, accepting and don't take things too personal. Not everyones feelings, schedule, opinions, personality... etc. are going to be compatible with yours.

3. Honesty is the best policy and is definitely the key to a good friendship. Be true to yourself and others, there's no need for all that sneaking around and shady business. How honest you are to other people allows them to see what kind of person you are.

Remember: Communication is key.
